Caymus Vineyards Winemaker Chuck Wagner will be the Recipient of the Professional Excellence in Oenology Award at the 15th Annual Gold Coast Classic in New York

Winemaker Chuck Wagner of Napa Valley’s Caymus Vineyards will receive the Professional Excellence in Oenology Award at the 15th Annual Gold Coast Classic for his contributions to the American wine industry. The award will be presented by New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) and Quarterly Review of Wines on May 3, 2012, at the Ritz-Carlton, Battery Park in New York.

NYIT president Edward Guiliano and Richard Elia, publisher of Quarterly Review of Wines, will present the award. Chef Daniel Bruce of the Boston Harbor Hotel as well as Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher, former wine columnists of The Wall Street Journal, will also be recognized for their roles in culinary excellence and wine education, respectively. The annual event, which has raised more than $5 million since 1997, helps support NYIT student scholarships, while honoring leaders in the food and wine industry.

Chuck Wagner co-founded Caymus Vineyards in 1972 at the age of 19 with parents Charlie and Lorna Belle Glos Wagner in Rutherford, Calif. Over the past 40 years, Caymus has consistently garnered critical acclaim including the distinction of producing the only wine to ever to be named «Wine of the Year» twice by Wine Spectator for its Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon. Chuck, along with his children, fifth-generation winemakers Charlie II, Joseph and Jenny, now farm nearly 1,300 acres throughout California for their Wagner Family of Wine brands, which include Caymus, Belle Glos, Mer Soleil and Conundrum.

About Wagner Family of Wine

From the time their ancestors arrived in California in the 1800s, the Wagners’ values have been firmly rooted in the land. Raised on the family farm in Rutherford, Napa Valley, Chuck Wagner joined his parents, Charlie Wagner and Lorna Belle Glos, in 1972 when they decided to turn their home winemaking talents into a commercial venture. The Wagners established Caymus Vineyards, taking the name from the area’s history as a Mexican land grant known as Rancho Caymus, and began turning their good idea into great wines.

The Wagners’ first production was in 1972 with just 240 cases. In 1975, the Wagners produced their first «Special Selection,» made from the outstanding Cabernet lots of that vintage. Today Chuck is joined by his sons, Charlie Wagner II, winemaker of Mer Soleil Chardonnays; Joseph Wagner, viticulturist and winemaker for Belle Glos Pinot Noirs and daughter Jenny Wagner as an apprentice winemaker. Conundrum white wine, made by long-time winemaker Jon Bolta, rounds out The Wagner Family of Wine. All of the wines bearing the Wagner name are made with the quality and care instilled by generations of hands-on farming and winemaking in California.
